One of a dog’s greatest attributes is that no matter how long we’re gone (a few minutes or all day), they’re always prepared to throw us a “welcome home” party as soon as we walk in. Some say dogs can’t actually smile, but once you see this little senior Chihuahua named Red, you may disagree.
There’s nothing like this precious Chihuahua’s reaction to wash away any difficulties, heartbreak, or pain from the day. Red may be busy sniffing around the lawn, but once he spots Mom, you can clearly see this pup is smiling. He’s perfect in every way!

As sweet as Red is minding his own business outside, Mom’s presence is a welcomed gift. When she’s home, you’ll always find this handsome fella right by her side. If this is the life, I’d never leave again!
Can Dogs Smile?
Dogs can make facial expressions that resemble human smiles, but they don’t necessarily mean what we think they do, and there are several types of grins. Some smart pups learn the trick by pulling back their lips if they’ve made their humans laugh the last few times they did it, and they’ll repeat it because they know it makes their humans happy.
A “happy” smile happens when dogs are relaxed, have soft eyes, and wiggly bodies to show they’re feeling pretty good. This is about as close to our smile as they can get! If your pup lowers their head with flattened ears while squinting and showing their front teeth, these can be signs of submission, anxiety, or appeasement toward you.
If your pup shows their teeth with a stiff, rigid body, hard glare, and raised hair, they’re demonstrating signs of aggression and shouldn’t be approached. Knowing what your pup’s expressions mean can help strengthen your bond. I’d like to believe that when my two dogs “smile” at me, they’re really happy and can’t hide it. And Red, you’re too cute—keep smiling, buddy!
