Pat McAfee has maintained a significant presence across ESPN this season, but he insists one rumor regarding his future caught him off guard.
McAfee addressed Wednesday a Front Office Sports column indicating ESPN might consider his Super Bowl altcast as an audition for the Monday Night Football booth. He refuted it, stating the speculation was unfounded and that no discussions about it had occurred.
ESPN's highest-paid personality already appears on his daytime show, College GameDay, and Monday Night Countdown, but he hasn't been assigned to the network's premier live broadcast. The speculation emerged amid uncertainty surrounding Troy Aikman. Joe Buck secured a six-year extension with ESPN last month that retains him as the lead MNF voice through the network's next Super Bowl.
Aikman, 59, hasn't received a formal offer. Shortly after Buck's deal was announced, Aikman told Richard Deitsch he had anticipated a new contract before the season started and that when or if one materializes is "anyone's guess.", reports the Mirror US.

Front Office Sports reported Wednesday that the situation has generated "unspoken tension" between the 25-year partners.
Prior to Monday's Rams-Bills game at SoFi Stadium, the venue of this season's Super Bowl, Buck "broke the ice" on the issue, and the two had an argument, a source said. The situation de-escalated, and viewers remained unaware that anything had gone amiss during the broadcast. An ESPN spokesperson declined to comment.
The timing proves particularly uncomfortable for ESPN, which is set to air its first Super Bowl since 2006 on ABC. Buck and Aikman signed five-year deals with ESPN in 2022 after departing from Fox. Aikman was the first to finalize his agreement, with Buck following weeks later after Fox released him from the final year of his contract. Buck has previously referred to Aikman as "like a brother."

FOS characterized ESPN as playing a "dangerous game of chicken" by allowing Aikman's negotiations to drag on past the season's end, risking the perception that the network is indifferent about retaining him. Unlike in 2022, an Aikman departure would almost certainly dissolve the broadcasting partnership, as Buck would need to exit a deal with six years still remaining.
Should Aikman walk away, alternatives do exist. CBS has already parted ways with Tony Romo, though J.J. Watt has been working alongside Jim Nantz on its premier broadcast team.
On ESPN's roster, Greg Olsen is an impending free agent, Sean McVay would be a highly coveted candidate should he depart the Rams, and both Jason Kelce and Kurt Warner have featured on the second broadcast team for international games.
